Dear future student, my name is Sevil Carmen. Let me help you speak Dutch for real this year! First, let me introduce myself.
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, but for the last six years I have been living on and off in Italy for my studies and work. In February this year I've moved to Spain, Barcelona, where I now still live. I have two Bachelor's degrees: one in Social Work, youth care and one in Italian linguistics and literature. I've taught Dutch in several occations, from private to groups. While I was teaching Dutch at the University of Bologna, I also took a course in teaching a foreign language (in this case Italian) as a second language.
The people around me describe me as social and accessible, as someone with a broad view and adaptability. Not only in different or unexpected situations, but also in contact with people from different cultural backgrounds. I owe this partly to my own family and background, through a combination of a Dutch, Aruban, and Turkish culture. Besides I have been living a lot in Italy for the past six years, for work and study. I’m fluent in Dutch (native), Italian, English, intermediate in Spanish, and I have a basic knowledge of German.
Well, enough about me. What can you expect from my classes?
I like to combine traditional techniques, from grammar to basic everyday sentences and a more creative style like introducing music and films, theater, the news, or any other subject you'd like to know more about in Dutch. For me, it's very important that we work on something that is useful for you. Do you want to gain some general basic knowledge of Dutch? Are you studying for an exam? Looking for a job in the Netherlands and you'd like to obtain a more specific lexicon? Or do you just want to work on your fluency by having conversations?
I know all to well how frustrating and difficult it can be at times, learning a new language, but I also know how deliberating it feels once your noticing difference, in for example, your fluency.
If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to contact me. Looking forward to meeting you!
