How do you help your intermediate and basic level English learners develop phonemic awareness?

Phonemic Awareness is the ability to identify, figure out, and recognize and produce the mental effort to work with the individual sounds in spoken words. I have been using a method which has the student move a slider on a shared screen for each separate sound. This has produced some beneficial effects.

What have you used to build your student's phonemic awareness, and thus improved spelling abilities?
